ROOFING • WINTER LEAK PREVENTION

Ice Dams Explained: What They Are, Why They Happen, and How to Prevent Leaks

Icicles can look harmless, but they may signal ice dams—one of the biggest causes of winter roof leaks in Central NY. Here’s what to watch for and what actually helps.

What is an ice dam?

A ridge of ice forms along the roof edge. Meltwater from higher up can’t drain properly, backs up under shingles, and may leak into the home.

Why it happens
  • Heat escaping into the attic
  • Inadequate ventilation
  • Insulation gaps
  • Heavy snow + freeze-thaw cycles

Warning signs

  • Large icicles concentrated along eaves
  • Drips near exterior walls during thaw periods
  • Ceiling stains, peeling paint, or damp smells
  • Wet insulation in the attic

What NOT to do

Avoid aggressive “ice chipping.”

Chipping ice can damage shingles, gutters, and flashing. Also avoid climbing onto roofs in icy conditions.

What actually helps long-term

  • Improve attic insulation and seal heat leaks
  • Ensure proper ventilation to keep roof temps consistent
  • Address roof edge details and flashing trouble spots
  • Maintain gutters and drainage paths
